  • Also known as the alpine clutch, this is a type of knot known as a ratcheting knot in climbing for its ability to let the rope move in one direction only. Ratcheting knots are used in pulley systems in which a load is being hauled up a cliff; the Garda hitch prevents the load from slipping when the pulley system is reset.

  • So I'm guessing that this name derives from the eponymous lake? As opposed to, say, the Irish guardians of the peace known as the 'Garda Siochana'.

  • I believe it is related to the lake, sionnach--but don't quote me on that. It's definitely not named after the Irish guardians of the peace, though. :-)
