Also known as the alpine clutch, this is a type of knot known as a ratcheting knot in climbing for its ability to let the rope move in one direction only. Ratcheting knots are used in pulley systems in which a load is being hauled up a cliff; the Garda hitch prevents the load from slipping when the pulley system is reset.

So I'm guessing that this name derives from the eponymous lake? As opposed to, say, the Irish guardians of the peace known as the 'Garda Siochana'.

I believe it is related to the lake, sionnach--but don't quote me on that. It's definitely not named after the Irish guardians of the peace, though. :-)
